Communication Grows in Everyday Moments

Hi My Roar Families,

Spring is one of the best seasons for language growth.

Longer days. More time outside. New experiences. Natural opportunities to talk, describe, request, and connect.

Research supports responsive, play-based interaction as one of the most effective ways to strengthen communication skills across ages. You do not need elaborate materials. You need interaction.

Here are spring ideas broken down by age:

Toddlers and Early Preschool

Nature Walk Narration
Label what you see. Expand their words. If they say “bird,” you say “Yes, a big bird flying.”

Bubble Pause
Hold the bubble wand near your mouth and wait expectantly. Encourage eye contact, gestures, or vocalizations before blowing.

Sidewalk Chalk Choices
Offer two colors. Wait for a verbal request, point, or gesture.

Preschool and Kindergarten

Scavenger Hunt
Create a simple list with pictures. Practice following directions and describing findings.

Gardening
Sequence steps. Talk about first, next, last. Introduce new vocabulary like roots, soil, and sprout.

Role Play Picnic
Practice requesting, turn-taking, and conversational exchanges.

Early Elementary

Nature Journaling
Describe what you see using complete sentences. Encourage adjectives and storytelling.

Obstacle Courses
Give multi-step directions. Have your child repeat them back.

Board Games Outdoors
Practice problem-solving language and flexible thinking.

If your child uses few words, focus on modeling language naturally without pressuring repetition.

If your child communicates differently, incorporate their system into play. Communication access matters more than modality.

Small, consistent interactions build strong foundations.
