Spring often brings conversations about evaluations, eligibility testing, and IEPs. If a teacher has mentioned speech concerns or suggested evaluation, that moment can feel overwhelming. Pause. An evaluation is information. It is not a judgment. It does not define your child’s intelligence, potential, or personality. Speech and language skills influence many academic areas including reading comprehension, written expression, word problems, following directions, and peer interaction. Eligibility decisions are about access. They determine whether additional supports are needed so a child can fully participate in the educational environment.
