| Building longer sentences is an important step in language development, and you can support your child in fun, natural ways! Whether they’re using single words, short phrases, or full sentences, these simple strategies will help them expand their communication skills. Repeat & Expand When your child says a short phrase, repeat it back with an extra word or two.Child: “Big truck!”Parent: “Yes! A big, red truck!” 🔹 Why it works: This gives your child a model of a longer sentence without pressure to repeat it exactly. Offer Choices Instead of yes/no questions, give two choices to encourage longer responses.Instead of: “Do you want a snack?”Try: “Do you want an apple or a banana?” 🔹 Why it works: It encourages your child to use more words instead of just nodding or saying “yes” or “no.” Model “Thinking Out Loud” Describe what you see or do using full sentences.“I’m putting on my shoes because we’re going outside.”“Look! The bird is flying in the sky!” 🔹 Why it works: Hearing full sentences throughout the day helps your child learn sentence structure naturally. Read & Wonder Together While reading books, pause and ask open-ended questions.“What do you think will happen next?”“Why is the character happy?” 🔹 Why it works: It encourages your child to put thoughts into words and build more complex sentences. 🐾 Keep It Fun & Encouraging! Every child develops at their own pace, and progress happens with time, practice, and lots of encouragement.
