Fun & Easy Ways to Build Speech and Language at Home!

☔ Rainy Day Sound Hunt
–Targets: Listening skills, speech sound awareness, vocabulary
-Make the most of a rainy day by going on a “sound hunt” indoors!
-Pick a sound (like /s/ or /b/) and search for things around the house that start with that sound.Say the word together: “Spoon! Ssssspoon!”
-Bonus: Sort them into categories—food, clothes, toys, etc.
🌸 Nature Walk Talk
–Targets: Describing, sentence expansion, vocabulary
-Head outside for a walk and take turns describing what you see.
-Use describing words – “The flower is pink and tiny.”
-Ask open-ended questions – “What do you think that bug is doing?”
-Model full sentences – “I see a bird building a nest.”
🐣 Mystery Bag Guessing Game
-Targets: Describing, inferencing, asking questions
-Fill a bag with familiar household items or small toys. Without looking, let your child feel one and guess what it is!
-Use descriptive language – “It feels soft… it’s round…”Ask and answer questions – “Is it something we eat?”
-Build anticipation and curiosity – “What could it be?”
🎨 Sidewalk Chalk Talk
–Targets: Labeling, concepts, following directionsBring out the chalk and create a language-rich masterpiece!
-Label pictures – “That’s a sun. It’s yellow!”
-Give and follow directions – “Draw a blue circle next to the house.”
-Take turns – “Your turn to add something!”
